【Family②】My Grandmother Passed Away...

On 4 April 2022, my paternal grandmother passed away at the age of 86. When I called her on 21 March, she sounded fine, but only two weeks later she passed away.

I have been looked after by her in every way since I was little. Every year during the Nihonmatsu Lantern Festival, when I took my friends to her home, she treated us to a feast. Furthermore, until this year I had received New Year's money called 'Otoshidama' from her.

In her later years, she was ill several times, but I am reminded that she recovered with the support of her hobbies of karaoke and ground golf. Recently, she has been restricted from going out due to the COVID-19 social distancing, and the loss of enjoyment may be the reason why she was unable to overcome her illness this time. I am even sadder because it was just when she said that she would be able to devote herself to her hobbies again once the COVID-19 pandemic had subsided.

Last summer my maternal grandfather passed away and now my paternal grandmother passed away. I could not show them getting a job. I regret that.

This time, however, I was able to call my grandmother before she passed away. I was not able to call my grandfather before he passed away. In both cases, my mother gave me a message to contact my maternal grandfather and paternal grandmother a few weeks before they passed away. This time I thought there might be something going on, so I called her. As has always been the case, it is often better to follow my parents' suggestions. This time was one of those times.

I decided to try harder to make my grandmother feel at ease. Rest in heaven, Grandma.
